Abstract

Development is a normative concept. In its definition, the ideas of progress, advancement, and im-provement are transmitted. The states, meanwhile, design and implement public policy according to this definition. Consequently, the quality of life of a population will depend, to a large extent, on how development is understood. Various streams have participated, and participate, in this debate. From development alternatives, such as economic and human development to alternatives such as the Good Life, academia and politics have been enriched in recent years by the intense discussion. However, each of these approaches has its strengths and limitations. In this sense, the progress of this debate depends on how seriously both sides are taken in each case. The contribution that this article intends is to present the aforementioned alternatives critically.
