Collection of castor (Ricinus communis) ecotypes in the life zones of Imbabura and Carchi for their conservation

Abstract

This work includes research on wild ecotypes of the castor bean (Ricinus communis) living in different areas of Imbabura and Carchi, which became part of genebank at PUCE-SI. A survey was conducted in the different areas, where this wild species is found. To establish their spatial distribution geographic information system (GIS) was used, and the creation of a database was necessary to characterize the morphotypes, along with their photo documentation, which serves to es­tablish differences and similarities among the species. The collected seed was processed and a criteria was established for the differentiation of morphotypes in terms of primary and secondary colors of the seeds, the size of the caruncles, the weight of 100 seeds, and a data collection sheet with a photo. With the information from the collection sites, maps were made that included areas with characteristics suitable for the cultivation of castor bean, according to the specifications outlines by Holdridge (1967) and the vegetation of Ecuador by Sierra et al (1999).
