Abstract

In some lake systems of the Ecuadorian inter-Andean alley a plant known as "Totora" is propagated, the same one that has played an important role in the socioeconomic coexistence of some human groups for many years ago. This American junk used by hand for the manufacture of mats, baskets, rafts, winches, among other crafts has very deep ethnohistoric roots, the same ones that date from pre-Hispanic times. The current use of the cattail is not sustainable and therefore it is very vulnerable and in danger of extinction.
